First-Year Students Engage in Media Workshop, Meet Alumni

MCL 2024 staff

After moving into their dorms four days before Move-In Day, 20 first-year students got a taste of student media at Vanderbilt by participating in VSC’s hands-on media workshop Media Intensive. Each year VSC invites a select group of new students to attend the workshop to gain media experience in an active, immersive environment while building a new network of friends. Enrollment in the program is competitive.

During the four-day program, the students interviewed Dean of the Commons Melissa Gresalfi for the CommonsCast podcast, posted about the first-year experience on Instagram, and published a variety of videos and written pieces online at MyCommons.Life. They also engaged in evening social activities designed to help orient them to campus life.

Erin Logan MI 2024

VSC invited distinguished alum Erin Logan, ’17, to serve as the workshop’s keynote speaker. Erin spoke about the importance of networking and the value of engaging in conversations with people who hold different worldviews. Erin was named to the “Forbes 30 Under 30” list in the Media category in 2023. Having served as a reporter at Los Angeles Times, she recently joined the Washington, D.C., office of The Associated Press as an editor.

Singer-songwriter and recent alum Amelia Day, ’24, performed for the first-year students. Day, a Seattle-area native, is embarking on a September west coast tour before returning to Nashville in October to expand her music career. Day was an MI participant as an incoming freshman.
